"My Miniature Donkey Bachelor Group"

The Bachelor Group at My World Farm
The Bachelor Group at My World Farm
(Click photo to enlarge)

They all live together as they are maturing. They do have their pecking order with the oldest of the group being #1. (Right now it's the 3 year old Jack) They seem to go down in order by their age or close to it. The "Bachelors" are together from weaning age until they are sold as Breeding Jacks or they are Gelded. Even after being gelded they still all live together. Most in important.....these Jacks are never bred to a Jenny while in this group. I'm sure if one of them would be used for breeding, he wouldn't "fit" back in the group. There might be some actual fighting with the one that was used. This is why I never use any of them for breeding here on the farm. If I decide to keep one for myself and started using that one, he would be moved to his own "space". Only the new owner of a breeding quality Jack would be using him for the first time.

When any of my Breeding Jacks come together with a fence between them only (no hot wire at all), or a gate, they don't attempt to fight.....just growl loudly into each other's ear. One usually ends up "mouthing" like a Jenny would that is in heat. This is a sign of submission to the other "Dominant Jack". It's happened a few times that the gate to one pasture didn't get latched securely and someone found out how to open it, going into the paddock area. This last time it was Andiamo's gate that didn't latch all the way. In the paddock area is Rocky's and his girl's gate, the Bachelor's gate and the young girl group gate. I don't know how long Andiamo and his large group of girls were in the paddock, but in the morning, all was well. No, bite marks, rips or anything on the Breeding Jacks. I'm sure Andiamo took turns "growling" into Rocky's ears and to each of the Bachelor's that got curious and came up to their gate. Even Buster and Rascal just "growl" loudly into each other's ears with no attempt to tear the other one apart. Rascal will "mouth" at Buster. I guess Rascal knows Buster is the Top Jack around here and the oldest (17 yrs. old). So he is submissive to the "Old Man".

I've been very lucky to have and raise such well behaved and great temperament Breeding Jacks and Breeding age Jacks. Even Jacks that I have purchased as youngsters are raised in the "Bachelor Environment". They too turn out to be very polite well behaved boys. Of coarse their fine temperament was started by their Daddy's temperament. Also the breeders raising these young Jacks until I purchased them. All of this is very important in rearing a non-aggressive Jack. My hats off to those fine breeders also! I love my Jacks! They respect me..... they know I'm the "head Donkey" around here. If not for me, they wouldn't get any "girl friends!"

I'm not saying that all breeders can raise their young Jacks this way, but it has worked fantastically for me and all of my Boys. It has worked for me for 10 years....that's how long I've had my Farm. When I bought this place, this is how I started raising the "Bachelor Boys". When I lived at the "other farm", I couldn't do it this way.

I just wanted to share how I raise my Jacks

One little foal is kicking up high at another one behind it...luckily the little hooves didn't make contact. Now they will all snort, grunt, side-step, and swing their bodies around to make sure their neighbor doesn't get more than they do.
